Dinner tricks

Rob, eyeing the pot on the stove nervously: “What is that?” Me: “Split pea soup.” Rob: “You’re making me eat something with Squid urine?!!!” Me, eye rolling: “No. SPLIT pea, not squid pee.” Rob, voice squeaking with worry: “What is a split pea?” Me: “Like peas we eat with dinner, but dried and split in [...]

Discouragement

Lucy is doing better. I can say it positively now. She has some new medications, and they are helping to drain excess fluids from the body and keep her breathing clear. Her energy is zinging back. Just as a side note, I have learned that many women with breast cancer have the same problems as [...]

Friendly

I have left out all the names to protect the innocent. Last night at dinner Rob sits up suddenly and says: “My friend G in class says he’s going to move to Canada on Friday if he doesn’t get some more friends. Only me and B are his friends.” Me, contemplating the precision of Canada [...]

Pump You Up

Amos was a bodybuilder in the school variety show. He’s the one in the middle next to the ballerina. His class sang a version of “The Wheels On The Bus Go Round and Round” with different jobs for different people, and Amos stepped forward to illustrate the “Bodybuilders on the bus will pump you up, [...]

Day 28 of 30 Days of Thankfulness

When you are feeling poorly cats are a great help. Thankful for pets. Uncountable times James and I wished we could smuggle Ron or Skippy into the hospital for a visit. We’re also starting an antibiotic for C-Diff, which she tested positive for before we left. For now, thank you for holding [...]

We went back to the hospital today. It was supposed to just be a regular Cardiology visit, but after the Dr. walked into the room and saw her breathing he began to talk about admitting her as a hospital inpatient. It makes me frustrated to go back! Like playing Candyland – trapped into repeated falls [...]

Yards of clear plastic tube

Being home on oxygen means re-adjusting to yards and yards of tubing. Lucy is on the leash of a long plastic cord.  One end snaking out of tall, R2D2-like oxygen tanks, bubbling away through the plastic humidifier filled with water, and the other end taped right underneath her nose. James prepared by attaching lengths of [...]

Day 28 of 30 Days of Thankfulness

Thankful to be home. We came home! Yesterday afternoon it was agreed that we could go home and use our home oxygen equipment while she finishes recovering. Thankful that this was only a cold. (On the other hand, I’m having to push down thoughts like: “Only a cold? You’ve diagnosed this – oh Nurse with [...]
