Drinking Juice

In the midst of everything she learned how to steer a straw while in the hospital. Give me another juice. – Katie

I see my life

Over the weekend a lot of Lucy’s family came to visit. It was good and bittersweet. We hold on to her and each other all day long. I have to let the other kids go so they can go to school. It doesn’t seem like a waste of time to sit with Lucy and Helen [...]

Sisters of mercy

We have been taking a lot of pictures lately. I’ve also been listening over and over to my Leonard Cohen CDs. Remember his song Sisters of Mercy ? – Katie Oh the sisters of mercy, they are not departed or gone. They were waiting for me when I thought that I just can’t go on. [...]

Nooshling

There is a word we use to describe the baby girls while they do their baby-work; Helen toddling about and Lucy sitting and playing with toys. It is a made up word: nooshling, pronounced as if it has three syllables. Helen came to the hospital two mornings last week and there was serious hospital nooshling. [...]

Ash Wednesday

We’re facing some hard realities right now. James went to attend a short Ash Wednesday service at the hospital chapel. The chaplain there said today is a day to celebrate our mortality. That the cost of enjoying life for ourselves and others is that it must end. When James and I are experiencing great stress [...]

To the hospital

James has taken Lucy to Children’s this evening. She has been having trouble breathing since the beginning of January, but the severity of her trouble comes and goes. Today our hospice nurse came for a checkup (the adored “bug bracelet” lady – someday we are going to have to get one of those bracelets), and [...]

Flopping, Part 2

Helen and Skippy prefer to flop into boxes. Nestling your wee self down into a small, tight little space – it makes you feel safe AND clever at the same time! They rifle through the tupperware drawer, recycling bin, and toy trunks to find  cat-and-baby-size-receptacles. The suitable ones are invariably dragged into the kitchen. Kitchens [...]
